It makes no difference what you are baling, whether silage, hay or straw: the performance of the new VARIANT is always convincing. You adapt the bale density and the diameter exactly to the crop and to the desired requirements. The bales are always perfect. In year-round use of course. And if the day is getting a little longer: with the new VARIANT you calmly look forward to all challenges.
  • Finished bale size: 48" x 36-60"
  • 83" wide pickup
  • ROTO CUT cutting drive
  • Active hydraulics bale density control system
  • New terminal and COMMUNICATOR
Pickup
Clean pickup
The VARIANT from CLAAS was the first round baler with a 83" / 6.9 ft. (2.10 m) wide pickup. This proven concept is also used in the new VARIANT. Even the widest swaths are cleanly picked up. Even at a fast ground speed and therefore at maximum performance.
Exact ground guidance
Swivelling, tool-free adjustable guide wheels ensure the correct following of ground contours. Even on bumpy ground. Even during cornering, there is no rubbing of the ground, so the turf is kept in place for the next growing season.
Consistent flow
Everything that flows consistently, increases performance. The crop roller press, which was patented for CLAAS and has proven itself in many balers and forage harvesters, provides complete work. It presses the crop onto the Pickup, homogenizes and accelerates the product flow. The crop flows in an even stream to the rotor mounted closely behind the pickup.
Feeding System

The rotor drives the bales and ensures a forced start - for each bale and under all conditions. As a result, a maximum core compaction is achieved, which guarantees the highest bale weights. You clearly work more effectively.
Behind the pickup, a fast-rotating chopping rotor guarantees an absolutely consistent product flow and ensures the continuous filling of the bale chamber. You can drive the VARIANT from the start at the highest speed.
Always a perfect cut
The knives can be moved in or out from the cab. In this way you determine the number of knives. For each crop and for each intended purpose, you always get the optimum length of cut.
Baling Chamber
VARIANT means variable
Four high-strength endless belts form the bale chamber. Soft profiling ensures good traction, even when the straw is very dry. The very good surface covering prevents loss of broken straw. You can freely choose the bale diameter. For the VARIANT 380 between 2.95 ft. (0.90m) and 5.90 ft. (1.80 m) diameter. The models 360 offer you the choice between 2.95 ft. (0.90m) and 5.09 ft. (1.55 m). The bale width in all cases is 3.94 ft. (1.20 m).
Reliable drive
The high belt speed of 9.8 ft./sec. (3m/sec) is a prerequisite for high performance and bale density. Two convex rubber drive rollers guarantee the continuous drive of the baler belts. Strippers at the deflecting rollers and at the rear end ensure the drive.
Correct pressure
The new VARIANT has a specially developed hydraulic bale density control system, which guarantees the maximum density under all conditions. The active hydraulic system combines three hydraulic cylinders with a double tensioning arm system.
Hard or soft, this is not a question here
Unique and only from CLAAS: you can infinitely adjust the firmness of the bale core from the cab. For dry straw rock hard, for wet hay soft so that the crop in the core can air out.
Tying
The round baler system requires a brief stoppage for the tying operation. Now this cannot be changed. But even so, the new VARIANT is winning people over with a solid achievement. The tying starts automatically after reaching the desired bale diameter. Thanks to the high belt speed of 9.8 ft./sec (3 m/sec), the bales are tied off quickly.
Conventional with twine
Not just for net tying, but also in two-strand twine tying, the new VARIANT is impressive in practical use. Following the fully automatic start, the simple-to-adjust, precision-operation tying apparatus ensures solid wrapping. The tying is in an area that the driver can see very well. You see how it is running and that it is running.
Operation - professional control
The CLAAS Medium Terminal
Getting out of the machine frequently not only curbs your enthusiasm for work, but also diminishes daily output. We have done everything, so that you can comfortably operate the VARIANT from the cab. With the new comfortable control terminal, you have everything under control. Thus, for example, the baling pressure, the bale size and the left-right display are located within your field of view. Moreover, with the pressureless positioning, you comfortably clear jams from the cab.
